RESTAURO DOS PÁTIOS DA UNESCO

Como expressam os princípios fundamentais da UNESCO: “Os arranjos políticos e econômicos dos governos não são suficientes para garantir o apoio duradouro e sincero dos povos. A paz deve ser fundada no diálogo e na compreensão mútua. A paz deve ser construída sobre a solidariedade intelectual e moral da humanidade”.

Acreditamos que a oportunidade de renovar os Jardins do Pátio da UNESCO projetados por Burle Marx é uma oportunidade de colocar em prática esses princípios – por meio do diálogo e do entendimento mútuo de diferentes gerações.

Com base nos conceitos e ideias endossados pela UNESCO, nosso projeto atua com sensibilidade sobre o patrimônio edificado, respeita o legado do renomado paisagista brasileiro e opera de forma assertiva para o futuro. Ao promover o respeito pelo patrimônio cultural, nosso objetivo é ajudar o jardim original a atingir seu potencial máximo.

A proposta conquista isso restaurando os mosaicos originais, valorizando as plantações de jardins, restaurando sua geometria, e sugerindo escadas e infra-estrutura na praça superior. Concentrar-se nessas condições fará com que os relacionamentos existentes prosperem.

Devido às modificações ao longo dos anos, os pátios existentes não correspondem mais à visão original de Burle Marx. Restaurar a geometria, a textura e as espécies originais do pátio denotam um sinal de respeito ao seu legado, enquanto as melhorias constroem um espaço para o futuro da UNESCO e seus colaboradores. Buscando uma postura respeitosa com o passado, os acréscimos, como as escadas, pretendem ser leves e sensíveis às paisagens existentes e propostas. Os pátios renovados parecerão tão convidativos e humanos quanto o espírito da UNESCO.

Por meio dessa colaboração, acreditamos que o projeto poderá criar novos campos de diálogo e entendimento mútuo e, posteriormente, fortalecer os laços entre todas as nações.

RESTORATION OF UNESCO PATIOS

As UNESCO’s main principles express: “Political and economic arrangements of governments are not enough to secure the lasting and sincere support of the peoples. Peace must be founded upon dialogue and mutual understanding. Peace must be built upon the intellectual and moral solidarity of humanity.”

We believe that the opportunity to renovate UNESCO’s Patio Gardens designed by Burle Marx is an opportunity to put in practice those principles—through dialogue and the mutual understanding of different generations.

Guided by the concepts and ideas endorsed by UNESCO, our project acts with sensibility over the built heritage, shows respect for the legacy of the renowned Brazilian Designer, and acts assertively for the future. By promoting respect for cultural heritage, our goal is to help the original garden reach its fullest potential.

The proposal accomplishes this by restoring the original mosaics, enhancing garden plantings and restoring their geometry, and suggesting stair and upper plaza infrastructure. Focusing on these conditions will make the existing relationships thrive.

Due to modifications over the years, the existing patios no longer correspond to the original vision of Burle Marx. Restoring the original patio geometry, texture, and species show a sign of respect for his legacy, while improvements build a space for the future of UNESCO and its collaborators. Seeking a respectful posture towards the past, the additions such as the stairs aim to be light and sensitive to the existing and proposed landscapes. The renovated patios will feel as inviting and humane as UNESCO’s ethos.

Through this collaboration, we believe that the project will be able to create new ground for dialogue and mutual understanding, and subsequently strengthen the bonds among all nations.

Ensaio

As imagens do ensaio fotográfico que se segue pretendem olhar para os jardins através de uma outra perspetiva, não centrando apenas o jardim em si como tema principal e ponto focal, mas sobretudo encontrando outras formas de vê-lo. Ao captar também o entorno, a narrativa deste ensaio se concentra menos nas peças desenhadas por Roberto Burle Marx, mas nas relações criadas por elas. Para compreender plenamente a dinâmica do espaço, os elementos periféricos ao seu trabalho são tão importantes quanto o próprio jardim.

Através de imagens de cores frias e desertas, cria-se uma narrativa visual – ajudando-nos a refletir sobre a situação atual dos jardins. Portanto, este ensaio fotográfico, muito mais do que apenas documentar o projeto, cria um novo terreno para nós; em que podemos fundamentar ponderadamente a nossa intervenção.

Photo Essay

The images in the following photo essay aim to look at the gardens through another perspective, not centering only the garden itself as the main subject and focal point, but if anything finding other ways to see it. By also capturing the surroundings, the narrative of this essay focuses less on the pieces designed by Roberto Burle Marx, but rather on the relationships created by them. To fully understand the dynamics of the space, the peripheral elements to his work are just as important as the garden itself.

Through cold-colored and deserted images, a visual narrative is created—helping us to reflect upon the current situation of the gardens. Therefore this photo essay, much more than just documenting the project, creates a new ground for us; into which we are able to thoughtfully base our intervention.
